🌲🚤 Urban Inspired: A One-Day Escape from Seattle to Bainbridge Island

June 22, 2025

Sometimes the best way to reconnect with your creativity, appetite, and breath is just across the water. For Seattleites looking to press pause without packing a suitcase, Bainbridge Island offers the perfect blend of walkable charm, local makers, peaceful trails, and refined food—all within a scenic 35-minute ferry ride.

This one-day itinerary is built for travelers who want the spirit of a weekend getaway packed into a single, satisfying day.

🚢 8:30 AM – Ferry From Downtown Seattle to Bainbridge Island

Start your day by hopping aboard the Washington State Ferry from Seattle’s Colman Dock (Pier 50). Grab a coffee to-go from Elm Coffee Roasters before boarding. As the city skyline fades behind you, enjoy views of Mount Rainier, Puget Sound, and (on clear days) the Olympic Mountains.

Ferry time: ~35 minutes
🎟️ Round-trip fare: ~$10 for walk-on passengers

9:15 AM – Coffee + Breakfast at Blackbird Bakery

📍 210 Winslow Way E

Step off the ferry and take a 5-minute walk into Winslow, Bainbridge’s main village. Start with fresh pastries and espresso at Blackbird Bakery, a local favorite known for its cozy atmosphere and addictive blackberry pie bars. Grab a seat at the counter or stroll with your coffee down Winslow Way.

🖼️ 10:00 AM – Morning Culture at Bainbridge Island Museum of Art (BIMA)

📍 550 Winslow Way E

A short walk from the bakery, BIMA offers free admission and a rotating collection of Pacific Northwest contemporary art. The building itself is stunning, and the curation always features local talent—from glasswork to photography to sculpture.

🧡 Don’t miss: The rooftop garden and museum gift shop with artisan goods.

🛍️ 11:30 AM – Browse Winslow’s Local Boutiques

Stroll Winslow Way and pop into:

🍽️ 12:30 PM – Lunch at Ba Sa

📍 101 Winslow Way E

Owned by two Vietnamese-American sisters, Ba Sa is a modern, ingredient-driven Vietnamese restaurant that balances comfort and creativity. You’ll find dishes like:

  • Shaking beef with green papaya salad
  • Lemongrass tofu with turmeric coconut broth
  • Savory bánh xèo (crispy crepes)

It’s fresh, bold, and distinctly island-inspired.

Alternative: For a casual bite, try Streamliner Diner for hearty brunch dishes with a quirky retro interior.

🌿 2:00 PM – Afternoon Nature Escape: Bloedel Reserve

📍 7571 NE Dolphin Dr
🚗 10-minute drive or short Uber from downtown Bainbridge

Spend your afternoon wandering the Bloedel Reserve, a 150-acre public garden and forest sanctuary. From moss gardens and bird marshes to sweeping coastal overlooks, it’s a meditative and photogenic stroll through PNW biodiversity.

🎟️ Reserve tickets in advance
⏱️ Plan to spend ~1.5 hours here

🍷 4:00 PM – Wine Tasting at Eleven Winery or Bainbridge Vineyards

Wrap up your adventure with a tasting flight or glass of local wine.

  • Eleven Winery (Winslow tasting room) – Fun, approachable wines with a casual vibe
  • Bainbridge Vineyards – For a more rustic, farm-like setting just outside town (if you have a car)

🍽️ 5:30 PM – Dinner Before Ferry: Café Hitchcock or Seabird

Option 1: Hitchcock

📍 133 Winslow Way E
Wrap up your Bainbridge adventure with a refined and cozy dinner at Café Hitchcock. Nestled in a historic building just steps from the ferry terminal, this intimate bistro serves up Northwest-inspired cuisine with global influence, using seasonal ingredients from local farms and purveyors.

📍 133 Winslow Way E (same space as Hitchcock, seasonal pop-up)
A seafood-centric concept with thoughtful cocktails and oysters on the half shell.

Prefer something lighter? Stop at Bruciato for Neapolitan pizza and craft cocktails.
